About Recidiviz

Recidiviz leverages data to help make the criminal justice system smaller, safer, and more equitable. They provide practical tech tools and insights for states that can reduce incarceration rates, move people swiftly and successfully through the system, and improve individual outcomes.

Criminal justice data lives across too many disconnected databases, preventing corrections agencies from accessing it to make informed decisions. Oftentimes, the data is so scattered that people can fall through the cracks — and remain in the system well beyond their earliest release date. Recidiviz built a platform that brings all of that disparate data together, and then provides data-driven insights to corrections leaders and their staff to help them safely move people out of prison and off of probation or parole.

Working in partnership with people impacted by the criminal justice system, Recidiviz builds technology that is innovative, efficient, and life-changing.

Our partnership

We saw incredible potential in the model of Recidiviz and in the leadership of Clementine Jacoby. She was building a technology program to work on an entrenched issue that was solvable: providing the data and information needed to show officers who is eligible for release today.

When we invested in Recidiviz in 2020, the organization had already formed partnerships in five states, in which they had signed data sharing agreements to access probation, prison, and parole data; set up automated data intake; and offered an initial tool to help corrections officers identify decarceral opportunities. In scaling this model further since then, Recidiviz has safely accelerated 100,000+ people out of the criminal justice system. In 2023 alone, Recidiviz launched 21 new tools accelerating 34,000 additional people out of the criminal justice system.

Today, Recidiviz has 17 state partners — representing 40% of the US prison population — and has grown its government revenue to cover nearly 40% of costs. We increased our grants to Recidiviz in 2021 and again in 2023.

Impact & accomplishments

Recidiviz is now working in 17 states, and has helped 100,000+ people get discharged, downgraded, or diverted from the criminal justice system. The Pershing Square team has gone beyond financial support and has also provided communications, fundraising, and operations help to Recidiviz. We are now partnered with five other foundations that support Recidiviz’s national scaling plan.
